Microchipping a Pet

If you care for a dog or cat, you probably know that sinking feeling when your beloved pet escapes from your property and fails to return home in a reasonable amount of time. All kinds of terrible thoughts can go through your mind. While cell phones and social media have made it easier to find owners of lost pets, many end up in shelters or with other families when the original owners can't be located. Having your pet microchipped can change all of that, and we at Clay-Chalkville Animal Clinic in Pinson, AL, offer this service.

What is Microchipping?

Microchipping is a quick and painless procedure where a small identification chip is inserted just under the skin of your pet. This microchip contains vital information, including your pet's name, your name, your address, and your contact information. You can also have your pet's vaccination and health information included in the file. The implant is about the size of a grain of rice and stays painlessly inside your pet for his or her entire life. If your pet should become lost and is found by a dog warden or good samaritan, the warden or any shelter or veterinary clinic can scan the chip, access your information and return your pet to you. The information on file is maintained by a third party data company, so you can update your contact information if you move or change phone numbers.
