Pet Eye Infections

What Causes Pet Eye Infections?

Many pet eye infections are caused by a foreign substance infecting the eye and causing irritation and other symptoms common with them. Anything from viruses, such as the herpes virus, to bacteria and fungus can all possibly contribute to pet eye infections. Infections can also be caused due to previous injuries of the eye becoming infected.

Because your pet is lower to the ground, the chances of it getting an eye infection may increase. Thus, it's important to be on the lookout for any signs and symptoms of a pet eye infection. These may include:

  • Red eyes
  • Watery eyes
  • Itchy eyes
  • Pus coming out of the eye
  • Discharge coming out of injuries to the eye
  • Inability to open the eye
  • Trouble seeing (seen in wobbling and unsteady gait)

How Our Veterinarian Provides Treatment

Our veterinarian will conduct an eye exam and look at the eye itself, the eyelid, and surrounding tissue for signs of an eye infection. He can also conduct a light test where your pet will look into this light and measure their eye activity.

Our veterinarian can then provide treatment for pet eye infections such as medications like antibiotics, eye drops, and pain medication. Our vet will then provide a follow-up exam to ensure your pet eye infections do not lead to complications such as partial or full vision loss.

Some other conditions, such as cataracts, can also mimic eye infections, so our vet can help provide an exam and treatment for these as well.
