Common Questions about Pet Eye Infections

How does my pet get an eye infection?

Pets can get eye infections from a variety of sources, such as:

  • From other animals
  • Allergies
  • Bacteria
  • Fungi
  • Parasites
  • Viruses
  • Injury to their eye (such as a scratch from a plant or another animal)
  • Foreign particles like dirt or spores

How will I know if my pet has an eye infection?

Some eye infections can cause permanent damage to your pet's eyesight if left untreated, so it's important to know what to look for.

Common symptoms include:

  • Red eyes
  • Watery eyes or discharge from eyes
  • Eye pain or irritation
  • Swelling and redness around the eyes
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Excessive blinking or squinting
  • Rubbing and pawing of the eye
  • Keeping the irritated eye closed

What are common eye infections my pet can get?

The most common is conjunctivitis (pink eye), an inflammation of the tissue that lines the eye and eyelid. Other infections include corneal inflammation, eye ulcers, and uveitis (swelling of the eye's middle layer).

How will my pet's eye infection be treated?

There are several ways your veterinarian can treat your pet's eye infection. They may prescribe antibiotics, anti-inflammatory drops, and other medications. In some cases, surgery may be necessary.

How can I prevent my pet from getting eye infections?

To help prevent eye infections, keep your pet inside, away from contaminants, spores, and irritants. Also, wipe their eyes with a damp cloth and keep their hair trimmed around their eyes.

If you see signs of infection, assume it's contagious and keep other pets in the household separated. Don't share bedding, toys, or feeding bowls until treated.

Can the infection go away on its own?

Not all eye infections pose a serious health problem to your pet, but you shouldn't diagnose them on your own or pass them off as harmless. If you see signs of irritation, you can try rinsing the eye with warm water to flush out any particles that may be causing the issue. If the symptoms continue, have your pet checked out by a veterinarian as soon as possible.
